Gekisai Dai Ichi
Kata are the backbone to learning karate. They describe the punches, strikes, blocks and kicks which should be used without hesitation. Geki Sai Dai Ichi is the first full length kata you learn but it's importance should not be underestimated. This Kata was created by Chojun Miyagi in 1940 . It was developed to help karateka practice basic techniques. It should be noted that it is the only kata in which a forward step is used to finish the kata all other kata are finished with a backward step into yoi.

Step By Step Guide
About Geki Sai Dai Ichi
Geki Sai Dai Ichi was introduced by Chojun Miyagi in 1940 in order to introduce Goju Ryu to High Schools and the wider Okinawan population. Until this time Sanchin, a complex and detailed kata, was the first to be learnt.
When translated the kata name means 'To Smash and Destroy part 1' and is the predecessor to Geki Sai Dai Ni (part 2). It uses basic techniques with an emphasis on speed and power and there are several bunkai (applications) to accompany the kata.
